WWAT Overview

Wireless monitoring of instrumentation sensors (4 - 20 mA) such as temperature, flow, pressure, voltage, current, water/fuel levels, weight, speeds, revolutions, etc. with existing SCADA software systems have been a requirement in the industry for many years.

Typical limitations with wired telemetry systems are:

  • Cable distance restrictions
  • Cables are vulnerable to aging, breaking and cable theft
  • Cost of digging cable trenches and laying cables
  • Damage of equipment due to lightning
  • Maintenance of wired telemetry systems

ESS has considered the above shortcomings and has designed a unique new system called WWAT (Wireless Wide Area Telemetry) that enables wide area telemetry by virtue of wireless communications and usage of other third party communications infrastructure.

The application of remote telemetry dictates that the system is almost exclusively installed outdoors. The outdoors installation lays down unique challenges with regards to lightning and surge protection. The WWAT platform was designed with these constraints in mind and offers multiple layers of protection.

On the sensor side, the sensors are connected to the WWAT-488 module. The wireless transmission is achieved by means of conventional radio, radio trunking or GSM. Ethernet LAN connectivity to existing wide area networks is also possible.

On the control side, the client SCADA is connected to the WWAT OPC Server ensuring seamless communication between the WWAT modules and the client SCADA.

Benefits

No need for long distance cabling

ESS OPC Server can be easily integrated to well known SCADA systems such as: Adroit; Citect; Fix; Honeywell, In-Touch, Siemens, etc.

Event driven (non polling), with health checks (Alive messages)

ESS WWAT OPC has configuration facilities

Modular Concept, easy to add WWAT nodes and concentrators

Various wireless interfaces:

Conventional VHF or UHF data radio

Radio Trunking

Typical WWAT Application Fields

Gas concentration monitoring in smoke stacks

This application makes use of primarily the analog inputs. It is typically used with an Ethernet / Wireless LAN connection so as to obtain trending information on the SCADA.

Temperature monitoring in cooling facilities or over-temperature in electrical equipment (electrical motors, pumps, power transformers)

This application makes use of primarily the analog inputs. It is typically used with big on-change deltas so as to only send extreme changes to the SCADA. This type of application is ideal to implement with low bandwidth radio equipment.

Pump operation monitoring in water pumps and environmental protection applications

This application makes use of primarily the digital inputs. It can use either SCADA monitoring equipment or a WWAT to WWAT set-up, for small installations. The digital outputs on the WWAT can be remotely activated from the SCADA and is typically used to implement safety overrides on pumps. This type of application is ideal to implement with low bandwidth radio equipment.

Remote equipment site monitoring such as RF high-sites

This application makes use of primarily the digital inputs. This type of application is ideal to implement with low bandwidth radio equipment.

Stock monitoring applications in the chemical storage industry, etc.

The analog sensing capability is used together with load cells and floats to monitor the levels of storage silos. This application makes use of the a combination of analog and digital inputs. This type application is ideal to implement with low bandwidth radio equipment.
